Challenge Tour pro posts 58, accomplishes a first in golf history

Move over, Jim Furyk, there’s a new “Mr. 58” in professional golf.

Alejandro Del Rey joined an exclusive club on Friday by firing a 58 in the second round of the Challenge Tour’s Swiss Challenge. OK, so it’s not quite the same as pulling off the feat on the PGA Tour, but Del Rey actually accomplished something no one has in golf history.

In shooting 58 at the par-72 Golf Saint Apollinaire, Del Rey became the first to post a 14-under-par score on a major tour. Here’s a look at his ridiculous scorecard, which includes eight birdies and three eagles:

The 23-year-old started his magical round on the back nine and was five under through three holes thanks to eagles on 11 and 12. The Arizona State product got to the ninth hole, his final one of the day, needing birdie to break 60. Instead, he made one final eagle. Del Rey’s 58 is also the first on the European Tour’s developmental circuit.

Despite shooting two over in his first round, Del Rey finds himself at 12 under at the midway point of the tournament. He trails 36-hole leader Lukas Nemecz by one.
