Golf fans who tune out the fall PGA Tour season events are missing out this week. Mayaboba, now called the World Wide Technology Championship, boasts its best field ever, drawing seven of the top 20 players in the world this week, including defending champion Viktor Hovland; Justin Thomas (the betting favorite); Brooks Koepka; Tony Finau and others.
It’s likely the best field remaining for 2021 (Houston attracted a good field last year, but that was the week before the fall Masters), so we PGA Tour fanatics will be tuned into the action in Mexico. We didn’t mention Abraham Ancer in the paragraph above, but he’s also one of the heavy favorites teeing it up in his home country. Ancer has played well at Mayakoba with four top-25 finishes, but after finally hoisting a PGA Tour trophy earlier this year at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude, perhaps this is the year he earns a victory at Mayakoba.
Oddsmakers certainly like Ancer’s chances, with odds of 18-1, which are low for Ancer given the strength of this field. Ancer is actually the outright favorite over Thomas at one book (DraftKings) and is behind JT or tied with the lowest odds at the other books. Clearly, the models and data think Ancer is worthy of being this high on the odds board. Rick Gehman of RickRunGood.com has him slightly behind Ancer in his win simulations.
