It’s somehow 2022, which means two things: Everyone accidentally writing 2021 for the next month and the return of the PGA Tour.
After its six-week hiatus, the tour will start the new year off with the Sentry Tournament of Champions, which will boast hot temperatures and a loaded field consisting of 38 of the 39 tour winners from the 2021 calendar year. (Rory McIlroy is the only victor not teeing it off in Maui.)
Harris English will look to defend his title against the likes of Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson. This will be Lefty’s first time playing this event in 21 years, but he has won it twice before (1994, 1998).
Xander Schauffele, who won the Sentry ToC back in 2019, is the only golfer competing who didn’t win a tour event last year. He still qualified thanks to his gold-medal-winning performance in Tokyo last summer.
The Plantation Coures at Kapalua often yields low scores, but they were crazy low in 2021, when there were only 12 rounds total above par for the week. Just three times in the last 13 years has the winning score not been at least 20 under par. Last year, English won in a playoff over Joaquin Niemann; the pair finished at 25 under through 72 holes.
The winner will receive 500 FedEx Cup points and a $1.476 million share of the $8.2 million purse.
Golf Channel will carry live coverage from 6-10 p.m. EST on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, NBC will carry live coverage from 4-6 p.m. EST; Golf Channel will finish the day’s coverage from 6-8 p.m. EST.
PGA Tour Live streaming coverage takes place on ESPN+ from 3:15-10 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, coverage will air from 1:30-8 p.m.
