U.S. Open 2022: Local qualifying sites announced

News

The USGA announced on Tuesday the local qualifying sites for the 2022 U.S. Open.

Canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, local qualifying returned for last year’s championships. Local qualifying will be conducted over 18 holes at 109 venues in the United States and Canada. Competition will run from April 25 to May 23.

Those who advance out of local qualifying will then compete against players who are already exempt in final qualifying. Final qualifying, held over 36 holes, will also be held in the U.S. and Canada, along with a site in Japan.

“The U.S. Open provides thousands of professional and amateur golfers with diverse backgrounds from around the world the opportunity to earn a place in the championship through a two-stage qualifying process that was established more than 60 years ago,” said John Bodenhamer, chief championships officer for the USGA. “Allied Golf Associations in the United States, as well as the Japan Golf Association and Golf Canada, are working with us to provide a pathway to the Country Club in June where we can once again showcase the world’s greatest players.”

To be eligible, a player must have a handicap index not exceeding 1.4 or be a professional.

Last year over 9,000 entries were received by the USGA. The record is 10,127 for the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

The 2022 U.S. Open begins April 7 at the Country Club at Brookline. Jon Rahm is the defending champ.
