A potentially rowdy Friday might be a little more subdued in the Boston area given what happened in Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night. But, hopefully, the final three days of the U.S. Open at The Country Club at Brookline will provide enough energy and electricity to cheer up Celtics fans taking in the golf this weekend.

Having said that, the top of the leader board is a bit lacking in star power, though we know it’s way too early to start talking like that. Adam Hadwin, a one-time PGA Tour winner who does not own a single top 10 in a major championship, is your solo leader at four under. He’s being chased by the likes of MJ Daffue, Callum Tarren and David Lingmerth, all of whom are at three under.
And then there is Rory McIlroy, also among the three-under crew thanks to his second straight strong start in a major championship. Shaky opening-round play has plagued him in the four big ones since he last won one in 2014, but he’s finally bucked that trend and now looks to cash in on it with a win. He’s set to begin Round 2 at 1:25 p.m. ET on Friday.
Joel Dahmen, also at minus three, might become the story to root for over the next three rounds. The talkative tour pro claimed he could never win a major just 10 days ago, but he’s now put himself in position to make a serious run. Like McIlroy, we won’t see him until the afternoon (2:20 p.m., to be exact).
The morning wave features some rather large names to need to make a move in order to have a serious shot on the weekend. Justin Thomas (-1), Viktor Hovland (E), Bryson DeChambeau (+1) and Brooks Koepka (+3) will all be on the course soon, as will Dustin Johnson, who sits at two under, just two off Hadwin’s lead.
