Golf fans and tour pros are in for a change of pace this week at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where the standard 72-hole individual stroke-play tournament is replaced with a team competition. TPC Louisiana in Avondale, La., once again hosts 80 two-man pairings that will play in four-ball (best ball) and foursomes (alternate-shot) formats, the sixth year the tournament has been the lone team event on the tour’s official schedule.
Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, Presidents Cup partners and good friends, return to defend their 2022 title in which they shot a record-breaking 29-under-par for the week en route to a wire-to-wire victory. Along with them, we’ll see a variety of intriguing combinations, from family pairings like brothers Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick, to young talents like Sahith Theegala and Justin Suh, to unlikely partnerships like Sungjae Im and Keith Mitchell. Mitchell actually asked Im to team up four years ago and got a no. (Persistence appears to have paid off.)
Eight of the top 20 players in the world will be making the trek to the Bayou this week, and six former victors—including both the team and individual formats—are in the field.
The format lends itself to low scores, as TPC Louisiana historically has yielded birdies by the bunches despite the numerous water hazards—home to some fairly infamous gators—throughout the course.
Each player on the winning team will receive 400 FedEx Cup points and a $1,242,700 share of the $8.6 million overall purse.
TV Schedule
Golf Channel will carry live coverage on Thursday and Friday from 3-6 p.m. EDT. On Saturday and Sunday, Golf Channel will start the coverage from 1-3 p.m. with CBS taking over with afternoon coverage from 3-6 p.m.
Streaming Schedule
PGA Tour Live streaming coverage takes place on ESPN+ from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 8:45 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday and 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sunday.
