Dylan Wu was cruising along nicely after four holes Thursday at the Rocket Mortgage Classic when business started to pick up.
The second-year PGA Tour pro started on the 10th hole at Detroit Golf Club and bogeyed the 11th hole, then made consecutive birdies on the next two holes to get to one under. On the par-5 14th hole, Wu hit his drive 309 yards, then holed out from 262 yards for an albatross 2.
“Luckily the conditions were soft, kind of pushed the drive a little bit and stayed short of that right bunker, which was nice,” Wu said. “If it went a couple yards farther, I’d be laying up.
“It was the perfect hybrid, just tried to hit about a 245 shot with wind helping off the left. As soon as I hit it, I hit it perfect I thought, but I kind of lost it halfway because of the haze and the grandstand and everything.”
Wu, 26, birdied the par-5 17th hole and made the turn in six-under 30. On the two back-nine par 5s Wu made bogey on the fourth hole and eagle on the seventh hole after hitting his approach from 182 yards to three feet.
To recap, that’s an albatross, eagle, birdie and bogey for Wu to play the four par 5s in five under par. Wu shot 65 and is tied for third place, a shot behind Taylor Moore and Peter Kuest.
“It was overall a really solid day today,” Wu said. “Yeah, just got to keep on hitting fairways, give myself looks. Looks like it’s going to be pretty scorable this whole week with the greens pretty soft.”
