5th – the ‘Sea Hole’. Your first view of the sea from the tee. A hollow, short and right of the fairway is known as ‘Lady Astor’s Hollow’. In the early 1900’s Lady Astor lived in the large house adjacent to the 5th hole. She would chip the ball from her back garden into the hollow and thence onto the fairway to start her round. The sandy waste area to the left of the fairway was known as the ‘Sahara’. A very small area of flat fairway is known as ‘Campbell’s Island’ was named after Bill Campbell, the famous US Walker Cup player who managed to land on it all 4 times in winning all 4 of his matches in the 1967 Walker Cup.
