There’s something apropos about a player being on a heater … in August … in Memphis. That certainly describes what’s going on with Lucas Glover, who before winning last week’s Wyndham Championship was on the outside looking in for the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs. But a victory in Greensboro, N.C., extended the 43-year-old’s season another week, and rounds of 66-64-66 at TPC Southwind have him holding the solo lead at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and eyeing a deep Playoff run.
Glover’s 14-under 196 total ties him for his second lowest career 54-hole score in his 20 years on tour, with last week at the Wyndham being his lowest (192). And his Saturday 66 was his 21st straight round of par or better, with 20 of his last 21 in the 60s. Just once in his four previous times holding the 54-hole lead has Glover managed to win, but that one came … wait for it … at Wyndham. And, interestingly enough, Glover is the first player 40 and older to hold a 54-hole lead in a playoff event since Tiger Woods at the 2018 Tour Championship.
While the timing of Glover’s great run couldn’t be better, finishing off the victory on Sunday won’t be easy. Taylor Moore, winner at the Valspar Championship in March, stands one shot back, and while he doesn’t have Glover’s résumé, he’s leading the field in greens in regulation for the week. Trailing by just two shots is Tommy Fleetwood, who has earned more money than any player in PGA Tour history ($18.9 million) without a win. Three back are Max Homa and Jordan Spieth, young but savvy veterans looking to capitalize on solid play to put themselves in position for a shot at the FedEx Cup title. And five off the lead sit Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Patrick Cantlay and Sungjae Im.
In other words, there’s no room for error in Glover’s final loop of TPC Southwind.
Here’s the prize money payout for each golfer competing this week at TPC Southwind. We’ll update this list with player names and individual scores shortly after the tournament is over.
