Europe shakes late U.S. charge to win Ryder Cup

News

Tommy Fleetwood secured the final half point against Rickie Fowler to hand Europe a victory in the Ryder Cup on Sunday at Marco Simone Golf Club in Italy.

The Europeans entered Sunday’s play with a 10½-5½ lead; no team had ever lost a five-point lead on the final day of the Ryder Cup. Team Europe made sure that trend continued.

The European squad needed just four points on Sunday to secure the victory. Viktor Hovland earned one point with a win over Collin Morikawa. Jon Rahm earned half of a point by playing Scottie Scheffler to a tie. Rory McIlroy and Tyrrell Hatton each earned a point with wins over Sam Burns and Brian Harman, respectively. That left the host team needing to collect only a half-point to win the event.

But the Americans didn’t go down without a fight, as Max Homa pulled out a win over Matt Fitzpatrick. However, an untimely drive into the water by Fowler set up Fleetwood to lock in the necessary half point and ensure Team Europe’s continued Ryder Cup dominance on its home continent.

The United States will host the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York.
